When you ask anybody about pregnancy, two things always come up: morning sickness and cravings. Now that we are a number of months into this pregnancy, I definitely have some thoughts about these two, “popular” topics.
At the beginning, there’s the morning sickness. I found this to be quite the misnomer when it came to my wife, Abby. Sure, there was the occasional morning of not feeling so well. But it definitely seemed to pick up right around the middle of the day for her. Maybe it was the fact that she sits behind a desk for the majority of her day at work. Maybe it was the numerous odors of people heating up their lunches. Either way, I can’t count the number of days she would tell me she wasn’t feeling “too hot” around lunchtime.
But like the champ she is, Abby pushed through it, even if that meant forcing herself to eat whatever lunch one of us packed for her in the morning. Luckily for Abby (and me), as suddenly as the morning sickness came on, one day she woke up feeling great. From what I have read, that is another norm; almost as soon as the first trimester is over, the morning sickness disappears as well.
I have to admit, this was the part I was really looking forward to. I love to snack. It is very rare I go a day without having some chips, pretzels, cookies, peanuts, something, anything to munch on. I know without a doubt I get that from my father. Growing up, we would always have a number of snacks stocked in the pantry, and sure enough, after dinner, my dad would grab a bowl of them and eat away. Nowadays, my mom is better at limiting his snacking. There is a grandchild on the way, after all!
So these cravings would give me an excuse to eat some crazy stuff, and work on my Dad Bod as well! Let me tell you, it hasn’t 100% panned out as I expected. At this point in her pregnancy, she’s not craving too many things and the few random cravings she does have, I’m not really into.
Here are just a few of the things Abby has craved:
- Pickles (normal I hear – although she’s been drinking the juice too – yuck!)
- Orange Sherbet
- Sprinkles (she came home with these, but nothing to put them on)
- Sugar wafers
- Ice cream cones (even though she doesn’t usually like ice cream)
- A cinnamon sugar soft pretzel she got at the shore (she nearly bit my hand off while trying to snag a bite)
- Lucky Charms, Cocoa Pebbles and Cap’n Crunch
- Duck sauce and Chinese Noodles
Of course, there are also some things she can no longer stand:
- Rotisserie chicken
- BBQ sauce (OH THE HORROR)
- The taste of coffee (which I guess is good)
- Fishy smells
- Cigarette Smoke (who doesn’t?)
- Scrambled eggs
I’m sure at some point (fingers crossed), Abby will crave something I like too. I’m just glad there haven’t been any DEFCON 1 cravings at 1 am yet, though I am prepared! Three months to go!
